Dogs are often considered a man's best friend. Along those lines, many people consider their dogs to be a full member of their family. Not surprisingly, then, with the arrival of a new dog, most of the family's attention will be on it.
Of course, we all want our dogs to behave. We realize that a well behaved dog will be much safer and much more fun to have around. And dog training can play a crucial role in this process.
Usually, puppies learn better than older dogs because they learn much more quickly, since they are quite impressionable. With constant carrying out of the taught activities, there's a huge chance that they'll memorize it for the rest of their lives.
Moreover, puppies want to bond with you, as they are looking for someone who can provide the love and caring their mothers did.
Despite puppies being faster learners than older dogs, older dogs can -and do- still learn. If you wish to teach them, you can. Since dogs are living beings they learn until the end of their lives, even if they have never been formally trained and taught before.
Just like with puppies, with proper methods, adult dogs, too, can learn many tricks you teach them; at least, if you are patient and willing to put in the time. Just be thoughtful of what kind of tricks might suit them.
Keep in mind that dogs are quite smart: If you try to teach them tricks that are well outside their potential, they may feel frustrated themselves and it might make them sad. That is to say, do not expect things your dog will simply not be able to perform.
Along those lines, you should find out what tricks your dog breed is generally capable of, and which they are usually not capable of.
As an example: If you have a large Great Dane, and you think you would like do dog dancing with him, with him standing on his hind legs, skipping around, please think again. There is a lot of factors you should consider before teaching any trick: Your dog's breed, size, personality, intelligence... you get the point. Then teach a trick that seems like a good match.
