IM SO AGHAINST CHOKE COLLARS!!!!
beginning dog training from a store like PetsMart and/or Petco is far from what one learns eventually if they are serious and spend lots of money and time reading books, studying dog behavior and attending seminars before they would even come close to being considered good! Believe me, I know, I went through PetsMarts three month training program and now 10 years later, I know the difference
I gave up mentoring for ABC College because of the quality experienced from their trainers 
Wow… I hope that’s not true at most stores! I train dog trainers for Petco and we spend 3 months training them. Yes there is a giant book (2 in fact) that they have to read and learn, then there is a written test and they have to practice with me before they are certified so that I can be sure they know what they are doing… I guess I’m a “good chef” and we have some high quality “burger kings” around here!
you should try a prong instead. A GOOD prong will not affect the skin, its curve redirects pressure to avoid bruising. put a prong collar on your self and try it and then put a choke collar on your self and try it. Choke chain== badbad bruise
Prong= just a ‘smack’ feeling but no bruising

Thats called a Furrsaver collar. I use one on my poodle. People use it for two reasons.
1: if the dog chewss collars it cant bite this one off.
2: the fur can go through the spaces in the chain. My poodle matts up badly from other collars, but I have a much much less matting and collar irritation on my poodle with it, but I have seen them on Akitas and rots too for the chewing reason.

My lab does not get motivated by food doesn’t matter if it’s a piece of real bacon he sees training and wants out of it, he doesn’t get motivated by food or toys I tried for months! The only thing I could train him was to heal and that’s because I pulled on his collar like a choke collar.
I mean if I could get him to not pull and go chasing after dogs and cats every time he’s on the leach without a choke collar I would. I wouldn’t do this long term though, just as soon as he gets it.
The thing about being a trainer at Petsmart/Petco is that they basically give you a big binder on how to train dogs. If the dog is pulling on a leash- do this. Yes there can be good trainers at Petsmart, but that’s sort of like finding a good chef at Burger King.
Speak for the few trainers that you know from pet stores! I know a wonderful trainer for Petsmart that is about to graduate with her masters in Behavior Analysis and I work for Petco and I’m sure I could train circles around you! Don’t make blank judgements based a few lack luster trainers… Many trainers for these stores are not the best, yes, but most are just starting out… there are a few of us that choose this profession due to the need for quality trainers in those niches!
a harness would only exacerbate the problem
What about the link chain collar? I see most rotties wearing them. I don’t think they’re choke collars they’re just metal chain link types. I have a bracelet that’s similar. Any ideas? Are these ok as long as the dog is big enough to support the heavier chain?
Choke collars should be illegal.
If educate your self is different, prongs are not for all type dogs, and not to bash on people but the trainers at petsmart and petco are not good. If it works for you fine! take care and good luck
The “trainer” at Petsmart told me the pronged collar was worse. I dont use either– I have a nice strong bridle and leather leash. No problema.
I can’t use choke chains on either of my Chihuahuas because their tracheas can be so easily damaged. I have them both on harnesses to avoid that sort of problem, but harnesses just exacerbate the pulling when we go for walks. And, to add yet another problem, one of my dogs is a Houdini and can escape from her harness no matter how snug I make it… so, I’m not sure what to do.

personally i’d recommend a no pull harness or head collar
personally i think prong collars are WAY better than chokes. they distribute the correction equally.
i dont like using choke chain because of there history but would prong collar help
i need to learn hot to fit them for i could use it on my GSD
Do you recommend something other than a choke or pinch collar for a pulling dog? My bull terrier love to jerk me everywhere… But I wont use a choke collar, and I rally dont like the pinch collars so much either. Would a harness or one of those head collars work ??
A ‘half check’ can do damage just like a check chain can, it depends on how you use it. I use one to prevent a dog backing out of a collar.
I never use a ‘pop’ on the leash as a correction – clever dog trainers can figure out how to never need to correct like this.

When putting the collar on, the part of the chain connected to the live ring should be on top of the dog’s neck…the ring should never be any where close to the dogs trachea.
This is true what he is saying, but this is why we use a choke as a tool while teaching the dog what heel and other commands are, then we graduate the dog off the choke. it should not be a lifelong tool.
I was just going to go out and get a choke coliar for my dog…..not now, why subject them to the pain and they get used to it? No thank you!
