Dog Training: How to Teach Your Dog to Enjoy Taking a Bath Part 1

by on 2010/03/14

This is Part 1 of "How to Teach Your Dog to Enjoy Taking a Bath." The video was so long, that Youtube made me cut it into two parts. Don't forget to check out Part 2 (which is a video response to this video). This is my first intructional video:)! This video took so much time and editing, but it was well worth it:). We had a lot of fun making the video. I created this technique for my own dog Kaine, who, believe it or not, used to HATE taking a bath. I used positive reinforcement combined with the clicker to teach Kaine to LOVE taking a bath instead. He now loves taking a bath so much, he actually jumped into the shower when I turned the water on! This method is a hands-off approach to teaching your dog to enjoy the bathing experience. I want to thank my sister for letting me use her crazy Jack Russell Terrier, Jesse, for many of the scenes. The two Labradors belong to my parents and the little Chihuahua is a foster that goes to his forever home today. The two Beagles are some of Kaine's pup pals that we pet sit for. I hope you enjoy the video as much as I enjoyed making it:). Music: "Stargazer," by Achim Tober Happy Clicking!

Kaine came from a reputable breeder in Scottsdale, but she no longer breeds her dogs. I still look at Kaine and see that little furball I first brought home. He doesn’t look that big to me:). He is actually smaller than most of his brothers.

I might try this with my dog :) She doesn’t like baths and we always have to give them to her outside with the hose because she jumps out of the tub.

Great tutorial! So many people can benefit from this.

That’s the same thing i’m going through with my JR she just loves it and people always get a laugh when i go to their place and i head to the washroom she is right there and in the tub lol. But some times i would really like one without her in it grrrr.

I can’t help you there. Kaine loves water so much, that he actually jumped into the shower once! Lol, Kaine is such a funny dog:).

Here is a question; How do you stop your dog from wanting in the shower all the time? my dogs just love water too much.

What video editing program do you use? Because I would love to make BETTER videos!

Thanks for another super video.
If you’ve seen any of my videos you’ll know my dogs have no problem with getting wet, and they often need a bath. lol :-D

I love the way Jesse growls when he is playing tug-of-war. Nice job!

gsdfan99 March 15, 2010 at 8:35 am

Ashley and Healther, you are both such excellent educators. Your enthusiasm and encouragement is inspiring, even to those of us who aren’t actively involved with a companion canine. It’s always a treat! Encore!

Top shelf emphasis added by Jesse as he shoots to the end of the hallway with the appearance of the rubber glove. And what a tub vaulter! By golly, I’ll bet he can pick locks, too. ;)

My Gsg Plays with is Kong in the tub because it comes back to him when it drops it lol

THIS IS AMAZING!!!!! Thanx for making this video!
I’ve tried so many different techniques to get, Angel, to enjoy baths…. she’s getting kind of used to it. The way you helped your dog overcome his H-A-T-E towards baths was FANTASTIC!
KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!!!!!

I think you will be helping loads of people with these videos :-) Mabes is getting on well but she hasn’t got to the point of water being added yet!! hehe, might not be so easy then!! I’ll def post a response if she keeps going the way she is :-)

hunkymonkeykaine March 15, 2010 at 9:57 am

Thank you:). That’s great that you are working on this with Mabel. Most dogs go through life fearing the bath and that causes so much stress on them. I wanted to make bathing a positive experience and Mabel is so lucky that you are taking the time to make bath time fun. I would love to see a video of your progress wit Mabel:).

Happy Clicking!
