I just got a dog last weekend and whenever I take him for a walk he goes crazy at other dogs passing by (shows aggression). Once he see’s them he pretty much disregards any command and tries to get to them. This happens with any dog that passes, any help?

I used a techniek on my dog that worked verry well.

Just needed to teach him one thing, if he pulls, I stop walking. When he comes sitting next to me, we will start walking again.
He quickly learned not to pull and also to monitor me.

I uses a chain link leash. When the dog bites it, stand still and DO NOT PULL. The dog will stop biting the leash in a few days. Works every time.

Good tips Eric, although wouldn’t wrapping the leash around your finger result in a sore finger if your dog suddenly pulled?

what if i stopped t make my dog sit but still, she keeps on pulling. ….

now, we walk just like in a range of 2 houses and she was fine while i give her treats.. but when we overlap the 2 houses even just 1 house, she starts pulling especially if there are people and other dogs around or even none… why is that so? please help!

bretddog March 1, 2010 at 3:29 am

Ok.. to people who have a dog who pull, and those who have a dog who doesn’t move… If dog doesn’t move, bring some snack you know it likes. Nose is the strongest sense of the dog. That should make it move. If the dog pulls, you stop, and make him sit. Start again, if it pulls, stop again. If you get only 10m in 30m, then thats ok. Your dog will learn that pulling does not get him anywhere. That is the point..

A Gentle Leader seems good for your dog, Eric has a vid on it, check it out!

v92lude March 1, 2010 at 4:57 am

~Sigh~ Ya know, I can walk my two dobermans with a shoestring if i wanted to, once a dog learns to walk on a leash correctly its not like its only for that one leash lol. You really dont have to throw anything away. Buy some cheap leashes, and use your good ones later.

laurence265 March 1, 2010 at 5:07 am

are collars a bad thing for a dogs throat? my german shepherd is 6 months old and pulls like a train. that can’t be good for his throat, I don’t know what to buy a harness or a gentle leader..it’s gotta be able to hold onto him well, it can’t slip off. I tried your tennis ball throwing technique.. my dog only drops the ball if I have another ball now lol..so now I play fetch with 2 balls :S

Hi Eric, that’s a really helpful video you’ve made!
Great job!

Beoshamon March 1, 2010 at 7:15 am

For beggin, ignore him completely. If he gets noisy about it, remove him from the room.
For the jumping/scratching on doors, you need to be there with him, say “No.” in a very firm voice. The INSTANT he comes down/stops the behavior, praise him and treat him. He will soon associate the treat/praise with NOT scratching/jumping. Training a dog is very simple, reward what you WANT, remove good stuff when behaviors aren’t wanted.
